Classical Egyptian Dance

To define classical Egyptian dance is a task beyond my capabilities. It is one of the many forms which come under the generic title of "Belly Dance" and is enjoyed in the west by the young and the not so young. I know girls as young as 5 who perform and ladies in their 80s who still perform. In the UK, as in the Middle East, professional belly dancers are a rarity, most ladies dance because they love it, not because they plan to make a living off it. They perform mostly at belly dance parties (called haflas by the addicted) for their friends and fellow dancers.

Classical Egyptian Belly dance gives you the opportunity to learn graceful moves, to learn to control muscles you never knew you had; to put dance moves together into a choreography with your classmates; to perform for fun in a non threatening environment with a sympathetic audience and, best of all, to play dress up in gorgeous costumes with lots and lots of bling!

I've embedded below a Youtube video clip of one of my favourite classical Egyptian dance stars. Djamilla Hanann
is based in Albi (near Toulouse) in France and runs her own dance academy there.

Please enjoy watching a master of her craft perform and be inspired!
