Guest Speaker/Entertainer

My teaching skills and qualifications make me an ideal guest speaker/entertainer at social clubs, girls' youth organisations, Women's Institute meetings (and the like), day centres and retirement homes. My normal programme at these venues consists of a short talk on the history of belly dance, a demonstration of a number of different styles and a lesson for those who wish to take part. The lesson can be adapted to cater for those with very limited mobility and can be therapeutic as well as entertaining.

It has been known for some ladies' groups to be very nervous about having a bellydancer as a speaker at their meeings. I've come into the room to find ladies who look everywhere but at me, who fidget and blush. I must confess that, as a grandmother and the secretary of my church P.C.C. this attitude makes me smile to myself, my stage name is Sheherazade, NOT Salome! It can be a delight to correct mistaken impressions.

Usually my talk at the beginning of my presentation relieves their worries and they realise that, while belly dance has lots of glamour and glitter, it doesn't involve removing seven veils.

By the time we get into the workshop session even the most suspiscious has seen the elegance and beauty of this dance genre and is willing to don a jingly hip scarf and join in.
